Website Advice

Designing a webpage may seem like a daunting task. It's actually much easier than you think. You can choose your own design in Wordpress, so you do not need to worry about building the site “from the ground up.”

Here are some tips to help make your website meaningful for people who visit.

Basic Tips

  • Make sure your page is not cluttered. Do not add too much information on one page.
  • Each page should have a single purpose. Thus, you might want to start with an “About” page and move outward form there.
  • Your professor may want you to use your website for work that you do inside AND outside of class. If this is the case, make sure you and your professor can access your student pages easily. You may want to organize your student pages around the class itself.
  • Do not use greens or reds on your home (sometimes called “landing” or “splash”) page. Many people are colorblind and cannot see green or red.
  • Use a font that is easily readable. The most user friendly fonts are “sans serif” fonts. You can check out different fonts here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_typefaces

Universal Design

Universal design is becoming a major part of web design. Starting in architecture and design schools, universal design, or “inclusive design” in other parlance, is a design concept that allows all individuals equal access to web platforms, pages, and information.

The seven major factors of universal design are

  1. Equitable use.
  2. Flexibility in use.
  3. Simple and intuitive web design.
  4. Perceptible information.
  5. Low physical effort.
  6. Size and space for approach and use.
